Little did the up-and-coming golfer know that his moment would come on a Golf Channel reality show and that the only thing standing between him and taking another step towards his ultimate goal of a PGA Tour card would be 99 yards.
Holding a slim lead on the last hole in the final showdown of The Big Break XI, Gillespie’s SkyCaddie showed that he was 99 yards away from the pin and the $100,000 grand prize.
The Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung announced that Charles Barkley will once again take part in the celebrity pro-am in Thornbury, Ontario, July 6-12. Barkley was a fan favourite last year and will once again tee-off against some of the best professionals in golf.
“We’re thrilled to have him back this year,” said Wayne. “His swing certainly draws a lot of attention, but it’s his personality that really shines at these events.”
Upon arriving at last year’s Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung, golfer Justin Hicks paused when he noticed his locker number. The lifelong hockey fan from Michigan couldn’t help but wonder whether the random locker assignment was a harbinger of good things to come.
That locker number? 99, of course. “Seeing locker 99 for this tournament was pretty interesting and a positive little thing that went into the back of my head.” said Hicks.
The Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung is partnering with the Blue Mountains to host a Junior Clinic for area youth featuring professional golfers from the PGA Nationwide Tour, on Tuesday, July 7th at 3pm at The Georgian Bay Club.
“We are excited to host an event of this caliber for our area youth”, said Joanna Garland, Youth Advisor for the Blue Mountains. “It’s a great opportunity for aspiring junior golfers."
Samsung, the Worldwide Olympic Partner for Wireless Communications, unveiled its 2010 Olympic Winter Games theme and Games-related programs – including its Team Samsung athletes – at an event in Vancouver on International Olympic Day.
“It’s an honour to lead Team Samsung as the Games returns to Canada,” said Wayne. "I expect Samsung will link fans around the world so we can experience the excitement together.”
